37th America's Cup

37th America’s Cup

Born in 1851 as the "Hundred Guinea Cup", the America's Cup reaches its 37th edition, which is taking place in Barcelona, Spain. For the second time in the 173 years of its existence, the world's oldest sports event is held in Europe.

The regattas

There are three Preliminary Regattas that precede the final races: the first two took place in 2023 on board the AC40s (Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain, from September 14 to 17 – Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from November 29 to December 2), while the last took place in August 2024 in Barcelona with the AC75 monohulls.

The Challenger Selection Series began at the end of August 2024, while the Final Match will take place from October 12 to 27, 2024.

Participating teams

To win the right to challenge Emirates Team New Zealand in the Final Match, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, helmed by Skipper and Team Director Max Sirena, will first have to beat Ineos Britannia (Great Britain), NYYC American Magic (USA), Orient Express Racing Team (France ) and Alinghi Red Bull Racing (Switzerland). Flanking the Italian team for the third consecutive time will be Circolo della Vela Sicilia. On board the AC75 will be a crew of eight sailors (including 4 cyclors), capable of managing the "flying machines" that require extraordinary physical qualities, experience, and technological skills.

The boats
The official boats of the 37th edition of the America's Cup are the AC75, 75-foot foiling monohulls (hull length 20.7 m). For this edition, the AC40s were also introduced: 40-foot (12 m) “one design” (same for all teams) foiling monohulls that have been used for the first two preliminary regattas and for the UniCredit Youth America's Cup and Puig Women's America's Cup. For this edition, the rules also permitted construction of a prototype (LEQ12) to develop solutions, materials and configurations in preparation for the AC75.

Youth and Women:
new in the 37th America's Cup
The 37th edition of the America's Cup also gives great space to youth sailing and - for the first time - women's sailing, which now plays a leading role on the stage of the world's oldest sports event. The UniCredit Youth America’s Cup (Barcelona, September 19 - October 2, 2024) is dedicated to crews (even mixed) aged 25 years or younger on board AC40 monotypes. The Puig Women's America's Cup (Barcelona, October 3 - 16, 2024) is reserved for female crews without age limits, always on board AC40 monotypes.
