37th America's Cup

37th America’s Cup

Born in 1851 as the "Hundred Guinea Cup", the 37th edition of the America's Cup was held in Barcelona, Spain, between August and October 2024. For the second time of its 173 years of existence, Europe hosted the world's oldest sports event.

The regattas

The 37th edition consisted of three Preliminary Regattas that preceded the final races. The first two took place in 2023 on board the AC40s (Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain, from September 14 to 17 - Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from November 29 to December 2), while the last took place in August 2024 in Barcelona with the AC75 monohulls.

The Challenger Selection Series (Louis Vuitton Cup) took place between August 29 and October 5, 2024, and the Final Match (Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup) was held from October 12 to 19, 2024.

The boats
The official boats of the 37th edition of the America's Cup were the AC75, 75-foot foiling monohulls (hull length 20.7 m). On board the AC75 was a crew of eight sailors (including 4 cyclors), capable of managing the "flying machines" that require extraordinary physical qualities, experience, and technological skills. For this edition, the AC40s were also introduced: 40-foot (12 meter) "one design" (same for all teams) foiling monohulls used for the first two preliminary regattas and for the UniCredit Youth America's Cup and Puig Women's American's Cup. For this edition, the rules also permitted construction of a prototype (LEQ12) to develop solutions, materials, and configurations in preparation for the AC75.

Youth and women: Luna Rossa
triumphs in youth and women's events
The 37th edition of the America's Cup also gave great space to youth sailing and - for the first time - women's sailing, which played a leading role on the stage of the world's oldest sports event. The Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team won both the UniCredit Youth America's Cup (September 17-26), dedicated to crews aged 25 years and younger, and the Puig Women's America's Cup (October 5-13), reserved for female crews without age limits. AC40 monotypes were used for both events.
