On May 12 and 13, 2023, Prada presents the ninth iteration of Prada Mode in Tokyo, in association with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Teien Art Museum.
This unique architectural and cultural journey is hosted and curated by Kazuyo Sejima, the director of Teien Art Museum, architect, and a long-term collaborator of Prada.
During the two days many different activities took place such as dynamic conversations, workshops, tea ceremony, music performances and sound installations, a private dinner in honor of Kazuyo Sejima and a party with live performances at Unit.
The music program of the Prada Mode Tokyo was curated by CRAIG RICHARDS and KUNICHI NOMURA.
For Prada Mode, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum is transformed into a space where the guests can explore art in different forms and experience the historic architecture, the museum and the site-specific art works, curated by Kazuyo Sejima, located in the large gardens surrounding the museum. The main temporary pavilion, a wooden curved surface to host conversations, is placed in the European garden; while various areas are created spreading along the space for the guests to enjoy the venue as a whole.
Born in Ibaraki Japan, Kazuyo Sejima graduated from the Japan Women's University in 1981. In 1987 she opened her own studio in Tokyo and then in 1995, together with Ryue Nishizawa, she founded SANAA. Her own works include House in Plum Grove, Inujima Art House project, and Japan Women’s University Mejiro Campus. SANAA’s main works include the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, the Rolex Learning Center, Louvre-Lens, Grace Farms, Bocconi University New Urban Campus, La Samaritaine, and Sydney Modern Project. In 2010 Kazuyo Sejima was appointed director of the 12th International Architecture Exhibition of Venice Biennale. Her honors include the Japan Architecture Award, Venice Biennale Golden Lion Award, Rolf Schock Prize in Category of Visual Arts, Pritzker Architecture Prize, Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Letters, Prix de l'Équerre d'Argent, the Medal with Purple Ribbon, Thomas Jefferson Medal in Architecture, and Praemium Imperiale. She is currently a professor at the Polytechnic University of Milan, an emeritus professor at Yokohama National University (Y-GSA) and teaching at Japan Women’s University and Osaka University of Arts as a visiting professor.
