Human Brains: Preserving the Brain

Forum on Neurodegenerative Diseases

Prada Rong Zhai, Shanghai
March 31 - May 26, 2023

“Preserving the Brain” is a key phase of “Human Brains,” Fondazione Prada’s multidisciplinary project devoted to neuroscience and investigating different disciplines, from neurobiology to philosophy, from psychology to neurochemistry, and from linguistics to artificial intelligence. The human brain is examined in the plural to underline its intrinsic complexity and the irreducible singularity.

The Exhibition

Initially presented in Milan in Autumn 2022, the exhibition is realized in collaboration with thirteen of the most relevant international neuroscience institutes and universities, and designed by the New York-based studio 2x4. It consists of fourteen sections conceived by the research centers, each section examines a specific research process on neurodegenerative diseases employing video presentations, scientific documents, and visual materials. The exhibition path develops from pathophysiological mechanisms studied at a microscopic scale to a single person’s treatment, giving shape to the various steps of the journey of a drug.
This approach highlights the importance of personalized medicine, one of the project’s key messages, mirroring the general concept of “Human Brains,” which considers each human brain with its individuality and irreducible singularity.

The scientific conference

On 20 April 2023, a scientific conference will be held at Prada Rong Zhai to accompany the exhibition project. This conference is chaired by Giancarlo Comi and Fu-Dong Shi (Professor of Neurology, Center for Neuroinflammation, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China; Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin, China). It presents insights into studies, clinical processes, and methodologies, shading light on the importance of collaboration in the scientific field. It is addressed to the international scientific community and will involve scientists and researchers from China and abroad. The sessions will also be live-streamed in Chinese territory. The recording will be available online.

About Human Brains

“Human Brains” is the result of an in-depth research process undertaken by Fondazione Prada in 2018 in the field of neuroscience and investigating different disciplines, from neurobiology to philosophy, from psychology to neurochemistry, from linguistics to artificial intelligence.
The project, developed with a scientific board chaired by neurologist Giancarlo Comi, has been driven by a deep interest to understand the human brain, the complexity of its functions, and its centrality to human history.
